Custom or Modular? Choosing the Right Stand System

Choosing a system is a decision that comes before design, because the system sets both the limits and the budget of everything that follows. Here is an honest comparison of the three main options.

Bespoke wooden stand

Built entirely for you. Curved forms, asymmetric masses, concealed lighting recesses and non-standard heights are all on the table. Surface quality is as high as it gets.

  • Strength: unlimited formal freedom and the strongest brand presence.
  • Weakness: highest cost and longest production time. Most of it cannot be reused after the show.
  • Right for: market leaders, product launches, island stands and areas above 40 m².

Maxima system

Built from heavy square aluminium profiles with large glass and infill panels. It approaches the spatial presence of a custom build while keeping the ability to be dismantled.

  • Strength: the best balance of visual impact and cost. The frame is genuinely reusable.
  • Weakness: formal freedom is narrower than a wooden build; right angles and flat planes dominate.
  • Right for: companies exhibiting more than once a year who want a corporate look without paying for a new build each time.

Modular (octanorm) system

Assembled from standard profiles and panels. The system is hired, and you pay for its use.

  • Strength: lowest cost, fastest build, highest reuse.
  • Weakness: form is constrained, so standing out comes down entirely to graphics, lighting and furniture.
  • Right for: first-time exhibitors, areas of 12 to 24 m² and companies with a heavy show calendar.

Three questions that settle it

1. How many times will you use this stand? If the answer is more than once, a reusable system pays for itself from the second show onwards.

2. What are your competitors doing in that hall? A bespoke stand is spotted instantly in a hall full of modular builds; a modular stand disappears in a hall full of islands.

3. What is the stand actually for? Displaying product, holding meetings, or brand awareness? If meetings are the goal, the money belongs in a quiet, comfortable meeting area rather than an impressive frontage.
